Silk plaster is a decorative wall finish made from natural silk and cellulose fibers mixed into a paste and applied like plaster. It creates a soft, fabric-like texture — almost as if the wall has been upholstered — while staying breathable, seamless, and easy to spot-repair.
What silk plaster actually is
Unlike paint or wallpaper, silk plaster is a fiber finish. Natural cellulose and silk fibers are blended with a water-soluble binder and fine decorative particles, then troweled onto the wall where they knit into a single continuous surface. There are no panel joints, no seams, and no cut lines — the fibers wrap smoothly over corners and around outlets for a monolithic, hand-applied look.
Because it is fiber-based rather than a printed pattern, silk plaster carries a subtle luminosity and depth. Light grazes the texture and shifts gently across the surface through the day, giving a wall quiet movement without the visual busyness of a repeating print.
Why we chose it
Silk plaster is breathable and typically free of the VOCs found in many conventional coatings — qualities that align with the building-science-first way we approach every CREEKSIDE home. The finish is also elastic, so it resists the hairline cracking that plagues rigid paint and wallpaper when a home naturally moves and settles.
It is remarkably forgiving over a lifetime of living. If a section is ever scuffed or damaged, it can be re-wetted and blended in for a nearly invisible spot-repair — no repainting an entire wall, no hunting down a discontinued wallpaper run. The fibers also add a measure of sound-softening and warmth to a room.
