Custom Faceted Metal Island Base
Folded-origami steel with a hand-developed patina — functional sculpture at the heart of the kitchen.
At the center of the space, a sculptural steel base grounds the kitchen with quiet drama. Fabricated as a series of angular, faceted planes, the design reads almost like folded origami cast in metal — each triangular facet catching light differently as you move, so the base never looks static from any single vantage point.
A patina, not a paint job
What began as raw, silver-gray steel was transformed through a chemical patina process. Rather than being painted or plated, the metal's surface is deliberately oxidized to shift its color — a reaction (often achieved with a liver-of-sulfur or ammonium-based solution) that works directly with the steel to produce a warm, brass-bronze tone with deep, variegated shading in the recesses of each facet.
Because the color is grown from the metal itself, it has a depth and authenticity that coating can't fake. Highlights sit on the raised facets while shadow pools in the folds, so the whole piece shifts and reads three-dimensionally as you move around the island.
Functional sculpture
Paired with dark walnut cabinetry and the stone countertop it supports, the base acts as a piece of functional sculpture: substantial enough to anchor the room, yet faceted and warm enough to keep it from feeling heavy.

- A chemical patina intentionally oxidizes a metal's surface so its color changes through a real reaction with the metal — as opposed to paint or plating that sits on top. On steel, solutions like liver-of-sulfur can develop warm brass-bronze tones with variegated depth.

- Yes. The patina is part of the metal's surface rather than a coating that can chip, and it is sealed for everyday use. Patinas can also be maintained and refreshed over time.
