Limewash is a mineral-based, breathable wall finish made from slaked lime. It dries with a soft, cloudy, matte texture that catches light differently depending on the angle — giving walls a handmade, Old-World depth that flat paint simply can't replicate.
A finish that mineralizes into the wall
Limewash starts as calcium hydroxide — slaked lime — a highly alkaline mineral liquid. As it dries, it reacts with carbon dioxide in the air and slowly converts back into calcium carbonate, essentially turning to limestone. That means limewash bonds structurally with the plaster or drywall beneath it rather than forming a plastic film that sits on top and can peel.
The result is a living, layered color with gentle cloud-like movement. Because the depth is created by the mineral itself rather than a printed sheen, the surface reads as genuinely handcrafted — softer and more atmospheric than any flat latex paint.
Why it belongs in a bathroom
Limewash is naturally vapor-permeable, so it lets a wall breathe and helps discourage trapped moisture — a real advantage in a humid bath. Its high alkalinity also makes it naturally antimicrobial and resistant to mold and mildew, which is exactly the behavior you want around a shower and tub.
For wet zones we finish limewash with a breathable mineral sealer, preserving the matte, mineral character while adding everyday resilience. It's a finish that feels both ancient and completely at home in a modern spa bath.
